Got back from London earlier this evening and I’m utterly shattered. I had a great time, but I’m really looking forward to bed already even though it’s only 19:00. Meeting your girlfriend’s parents can be stressful enough, but couple that with having to drive to London and back and it’s pretty knackering.
I had some late nights last week which didn’t really help matters and I think they’re catching up with me now. Not only that, but I was due to get up at 6am on Saturday to leave for London but slept in because I was still up till at 2am watching Amy Williams take Gold for Great Britain in the Winter Olympics. Still, it was worth it though, Williams was fantastic, and it was great to see us get our first (and possibly only) medal of the games.
Feeling as tired as I did meant yesterday’s early morning trip (although we left at eight in the the end) was just that little bit tougher than normal. Late night or not, every time I’m driving to London or back home to Bognor Regis Town, there’s one thing I need by my side. Other than a full-tank of petrol and a penchant for going 78mph, it’s the long-distance driver’s best friend I need most; a can of Relentless.
Relentless for those of you who don’t know, is a energy drink that comes in a pint-sized can. And to say it’s pretty good at the old energy-giving is an understatement. I had a podcast one time that needed editing that night and it had to be finished that night or someone – possibly a small child – would get killed. I didn’t want that on my conscience – or bedroom floor, the stains would be murder to get out – so I had to stay up late until the editing was completed.
I knew it’d be a late one but typically I had been up late the night before so I knew I’d have to rely on Relentless to get me through the night. The long, cold winter night. The long, cold, lonely, winter night. The long, cold, wi.. well, you get what I mean. I was really hanging by the time I got home from work so I had the can with my dinner. What a stupid mistake that turned out to be.
Relentless is the most powerful energy drink I’ve had and having a full can at 6pm certainly kept me awake until the editing was completed around 1am. Thing is, it kept me up longer than that. Much longer. Even though I was awake with Relentless swimming round my body I still felt tired and all I wanted to do was go to sleep, but I couldn’t. 2am came round, still not asleep, 2:30 popped his little head round the door and I was still no closer to getting to sleep. The last time I remember looking at the clock with tears in my eyes was 4am.
That bloody Relentless! It’s certainly a big help at the beginning, oh yeah, “thanks Relentless, you’ve helped me stay up late to do this essay, thank you so much. Can I go to sleep now? Oh I can’t? Why? Oh is it because you’ve taken over my body clock and you’ve made it so one little sip of your deadly amber means I’ll be going to sleep with BBC Breakfast News starts? Oh thanks. And what about work, what should I tell them? I’ll tell them you’ve kept me awake shall I? Is that what I should do? I’ll say “sorry boss, I had a can of Relentless at a decent time in the early evening but it kept me awake all night and now I need another can to keep me from sleeping at my desk thus keeping the cycle alive to the end of time? Well I won’t. I bloody won’t”.
Yeah, that’s what I’ll say.
