Daily Blog # 0056 – Thursday 25th February 2010

I think I’ve lost my blog-writing mojo, and it’s all my girlfriend’s fault. No, really. It really is. Yesterday I recorded a very touching, very loving Audioboo which gave an in-depth appraisal of the whole Cheryl Cole affair and it got some quite unexpected feedback. David Turners’ response was one of surprise, and other people on my Facebook commented that it made them think about life in a whole new way.

The Boo in question is embedded below, so you can give your views later and tell me what it made you feel; be it love, anger, or just simple confusion, I’d still love to hear from you. Let’s go mental and try to break the ’4 comments’ barrier eh? Yeah, let’s do that.

I must’ve played that Boo about 40 times over the last day or so, it just makes me laugh. Not only that, but the enjoyment I got from writing, producing, recording and listening to it was so great, I decided I would do others. Showcasing my talents as not only a great songwriter, but a fantastic singer. I could be the new Lady Gaga I reckon. Yeah yeah, definitely. I mean, I’m already halfway there as I have a penis.

So today I was thinking of all the other songs that could get the Mat Murray treatment. Beyonce’s ‘If you like it then you shoulda put a ring on it’ would definitely get it. As would Lady Gaga’s ‘Poker Face’. There’s probably a Louise Nurding track in there too, somewhere.

So with my accountant contacted, and the studio booked, I waited for my girlfriend to finish work so I could tell her the good news. I was getting the band back together again! I’d be back in the studio, doing what I do best; making great music – nay, great experiences.

Unfortunately, my girlfriend didn’t quite see it that way. Once I told her what I was planning to do she responded with utter shock. “No way are you doing another one. No bloody way! (she whispered) It’s not happening”. I was flabbergasted. had she not heard the joy that sprang from my lips when I told her the good news? Had she not felt the deep meaning behind my Cheryl Cole message? I guess not.

Listen!

I couldn’t believe it. I pressed her for a reason but she didn’t have one. She just thought it was too “silly” and that she had a “bad feeling in her stomach about it”. I know she’s only got my best interests at heart, and she was probably only trying to protect me, but I still don’t get it. How will recording a few beautiful melodies affect me in later life? Will a potential employer come across the site and think twice about employing me due to my faithful rendition of Martine McCutcheon’s ‘Perfect Moment’? I don’t think so, will they?

She asked if I wanted to be known for doing those silly things. “Just to be known would be a start”, I said. I very much doubt, with all the shit you can find online, that I’ll be singled out and chastised for 3-second audio clips where I go a bit angry at the end. Surely not. Even so, I decided if she was bothered enough to keep the semi-argument going for the entire duration of our walk home, then she must be pretty bothered, so I’ve decided not to do anymore.

The thing is, from the moment I came home to write this blog, and straight after being told I probably shouldn’t make anymore Audioboo recordings as it might affect me in later life, I’ve found it really hard to write this thing. I feel, and I’m not even joking now, that my girlfriend telling me I can’t do something, effectively stopping a creative endeavour has affected my other creative output. Honestly, it’s my night off tonight so I was expecting to come home, quickly knock up “can’t quite believe I’ve just missed out on an NME nomination for best blog”-blog, eat our ‘Two Dine for £10 M&S Meal, then relax all evening. That never happened and it’s now ten to ten and I still haven’t published this thing.

So that’s it for today, I’m signing off. Hopefully my writing mojo will return in full tomorrow. Otherwise, there’ll be hell to pay.
